Internet Security Measures For Your Business
No business can hope to exist today without taking an active stance on Internet security measures for their business. The variety and seriousness of threats on the Internet currently means that any company who doesn't take the security of their local network or Intranet seriously are leaving themselves wide open to serious data loss, fraud and possible prosecution by the authorities for data piracy.
Modern consumers take Internet security concerns very seriously but surprisingly many large companies do not. They live in the hope that a serious Internet security breach will simply not happen to them - very much a head-in-the-sand approach to security as whole.
At the very least all companies should have an Internet usage policy which is signed and adhered to by all staff. This will help actively discourage staff from visiting harmful websites or downloading dangerous content or data. Just stating that an acceptable usage Internet policy exists is not enough - staff must have the issue explained to them and sign an agreement stating that they will adhere to this policy.
Another measure of Internet security for your business is data and access control. The current MP3 craze tempts many employees to bring their MP3 players or laptops to work to download or upload songs while they're actually at work. The first issue here is that they're not being productive and the second, and more serious, issue is that they're also breaking the law on your business premises. Companies can and have been seriously fined for employees uploading and downloading movies and music whilst in work. Again data and access control is something which needs to be explained in detail to each and every employee.
Usage itself should also be monitored. What exactly are your staff doing while they're in work? Are they producing results for you or spending 4 hours each day checking what jokes their friends sent them via Hotmail? Or looking for the best price for their summer holiday? Ongoing research has shown that the average employee spends around 2 hours per day surfing the 'net for non-business purposes. Do you really want to pay staff to surf the 'net? Obviously not. Trusting staff is admirable but alas not all staff can be trusted.
Finally firewall and virus protection must be current. There's absolutely no point in having anti-virus and firewall software installed on employee computers if they're either disabled or out of date. A worthwhile anti-virus and firewall solution will automatically update itself as soon as new updates are available. Always ensure that your staff are aware of the benefits of using anti-virus and firewall software and make it their responsibilty to inform you of any issues with security breaches or even minor security concerns.
