How Do You Remove Adware?
Most computer users tend to think that if you can find simply find the adware files on your PC and delete them that the problem is solved. Not so. Adware is becoming more and more "intelligent" and most adware is capable of downloading a fresh copy of itself onto your PC if you delete some of its files. This all happens invisibly.
So how do you get rid of adware from your PC? First things first - find the cause.
1. File Sharing Programs
If you have Kazaa or iMesh installed then get rid of them - uninstall them right now. If you have any file sharing (Peer to Peer) program installed then get rid of it. Most current adware that affects home users is because of file sharing applications like these being installed.2. Monitor Access
Who uses the computer most frequently? Is it your partner, your kids or a friend? If so then you'll need to closely monitor what type of websites they might be visiting or what type of files they might be downloading. Simply explain that you're having a problem with adware and if they could check with your before downloading anything - this is a common IT policy in companies now. Make it a policy in your home too.3. Strange Software
Click on Start -> Settings -> Control Panel. Find the Add/Remove Programs icon and doubleclick it. Go through the list of programs and write down the names of any that don't sound familiar to you or that you don't remember installing. If in doubt simply search for the names of the software in Google and you'll find out whether or not it's adware. If it is then simply remove that piece of software. Please make sure to check the names of applications in Google - just in case you try removing an important piece of software.
That still Didn't Work! What's Next?
This requires an all out assault - take no prisoners! To fully clean (and keep clean) an adware infected computer you'll need to do the following. Please do them in this order.1. Install and run a fully updated firewall package
2. Install and run a fully updated anti-virus package
3. Install, update and run Lavasoft Adaware
4. Install, update and run Spybot Search and Destroy
Does that sound a little bit drastic? It's not.
The firewall is there to prevent the adware from downloading a fresh copy of itself. The anti-virus software is there to detect both the core adware components and the trojan viruses so often installed with the worst types of adware.
Finally both of the adware/spyware cleaners will give your system a complete scan and find any stragglers the previous packages may have missed. If you pay somebody to come around to your house and clean out your PC the above steps are exactly they'll do if they're any good at all. The difference is that they'll charge you at least $75 for the visit.
