Ronald Scelson, second in fame only to Alan Ralsky, fits the description of a spam hooligan representing the dark underside of commercial email. Arrogant and uneducated, Scelson, also known as the “Cajun Spam King” was quoted as saying
“I don’t frankly care. I’ll break every rule there is to break”. During good times, Scelson can make between $30,000 to $40,000 a month, once an inconceivable dream to the high school dropout. From living at the back of a trailer, he has carved out a comfortable living sending spam, peddling everything from insurance products to cell phones. He has since moved a five bedroom home in an up-market neighborhood in LA. Legislators have yet to bring Scelson to court, but escalating anti-spam vigilantes has caused the Cajun Spam King to literally live with a 9mm gun next to his computer.
In summary :-
- High school dropout with an 8th grade education.
- At 18, worked as a computer salesman in Baton Rouge where stiff competition from Dell and Hewlett Packard caused him to look for more lucrative grounds.
- Started spamming in 1995 after a chance meeting with a bulk emailer.
- Unrepentant and unapologetic. He taunts “In five years, I’ll be even richer than I am now”.
- Has yet to be charged in court
The Cajun Spam King employs a myriad of underhand tactics to cover up his tracks. So far, he has not been charged and once manage to worm himself out of a legislation loophole. He says, "I will do everything I can for them not to find me to shut me down. I can stay up like this for years, and they'll never totally lock on to me".
Scott Petry, founder of Postini, a security services company which handles 3 billion email messages every week explains it very well when he said “Can you name a security threat that has actually gone away because of legislation?”
